It was established in 1930, and the building,according to the designs by the engineerFabjan Kaliterna, was erected in 1933. Until thebuilding was constructed on Cape Marjan,the Institute was operating from PansionSplit (Villa Schiller, current day Villa Dalmacija). An international contest was announced anda Norwegian university professor, Dr. HjalmarBroch who moved from Oslo to Split inorder to organize the scientific researchwork at the Institute based on experiencesfrom Norway, was elected to be the firstdirector of the Institute.
