The Church of St. Stephen

Slika

The Benedictine church and convent of St. Stephen caved in, so in 1814, the rector of the Archdiocesan Seminary, Nikola Didoš, ordered the construction, i.e., renovation of the present-day church at the location of the original church. Six pillars from classical antiquity were placed within the church, which were probably relocated from Diocletian’s Palace. The altar of St. Anne was erected by the de Caris family for the church of St. Mary de Taurello, and it was transferred to the Church of St. Stephen in 1819. It contained a polyptych with the depiction of the Madonna with the Child, saints, the depiction of the Nativity and Imago Pietatis. The centre of the church houses the headstone of the canon from Split, Ivan Krstitelj Augubi, with the family crest from 1490.
