(The heart of Marjan)

Jewish Cemetery

Slika

The Jewish Cemetery is one of the oldest preserved Jewish cemeteries in Europe, and burials were done there at least from 1573 until the end of World War II. Today it is a protected cultural monument, and it had an important role for the forestation of Marjan, due to its wall which was built around the cemetery in 1826. Namely, this was the location where, in the XIX century, the forestation of Marjan began, which was bare rock back then. There are more than 700 graves at the cemetery, some of which are of famous residents of Split, like the grave of Vid Morpurg. The mortuary at the Jewish Cemetery was built in 1892, today it is the building of the hospitality establishment at Prva vidilica. It represents the first example of a building built in Split using a new material – cement, thanks to the proximity of the factory Gilardi – Bettizza (it was located on the present-day Zapadna obala).
