The Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

Slika

It is mentioned as far back as 1362 (Sancte Marie de Merglano), later as S. Maria Pietatis. It is located on the intersection of paths, on the lee side of Bambina glavica, and one of those paths leads to the church of St. Jerome. The church has sections from the 15th century. The altar holds the stone relief of the Mourning, which is from the period around the year 1500. It depicts the Madonna holding the dead body of Christ in her lap, there are angels with torches on the sides, and the background depicts the Calvary. It was ascribed to Juraj Dalmatinac, and later to Andrija Aleši. Once it was enclosed by dry stone which collapsed due to the roots of pine trees and heavy rain, then the pines were cut down and the dry stone was replaced by a concrete wall. The specific feature if this small church are the messages inscribed on its walls and votive objects left there. Today, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on 14 September and the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on 15 September are celebrated at the church.
