The MHAS is one of the oldest Croatian museums keeping archaeological heritage containing approximately 20000 objects. It is the only museum in Croatia founded with the task of exploring and representing the remains of the Croatian heritage from the period of the Middle Ages, particularly the early Croatian state, from the IX to the XII century. Apart from the museum activities, MHAS also conducts extensive archaeological research of old Croatian locations, and it maintains abundant exhibition and publishing activities. In 1968, a decision was issued on the construction of the Museum building in its present location at Meje. It was built according to the designs by the architect Mladen Kauzlarić and officially opened on 05 December 1976.
